Printing a bicycle

Fillet brazing, TIG welding, carbon layering, tube-to-tube, computer numerical control (CNC), monocoque, hydroforming.

These are a few of the methods used to construct bicycles. Some have been around for a long time, others are relatively recent.

This bicycle wasn't constructed using any of these methods;

The video below explores the construction of the bicycle and 3D printing. I'll leave the explanation to the men in the interweb;



While this technology isn't mainstream, I think there's no doubt that it will become so in the near future. As explained in the video, you can already buy one of these printers for the same price as a good laser printer (around $4,000).

Some of the applications are obvious - designing your own parts, downloading blueprints - others are less so. Take this observation from the comments of the YouTube video as an example - First is a bike, then a car and then North Korea will be printing tanks, and then all the crazy dictators will be printing nukes. Not a good idea man.

My thoughts exactly!

Anyway, this is cool. It won't be long until every house is equipped with a 3D printer and a little digital native who knows how to use it too.
